Petrol and Diesel Prices Expected to Drop from 1st November 2024

Global Market Trends Driving the Reduction

Recent international trends show a drop in crude oil prices, with:

  • Petrol prices falling by $1.5 per barrel to $76 per barrel (previously $77.5).
  • HSD prices dropping by $2.5 per barrel to $84 per barrel (down from $86.5).

With import costs and exchange rates remaining steady, the primary reason for this price adjustment lies in the decline of crude oil costs.

Expected Fuel Prices in Pakistan

Based on current estimates:

Fuel TypeCurrent Price (PKR/Liter)Expected Price (PKR/Liter)Expected Decrease
Petrol247.03~244~3 PKR
High-Speed Diesel (HSD)251.29~249~2.30 PKR

In mid-October 2024, the government had increased the price of diesel by Rs. 5 per liter, while keeping petrol prices unchanged at Rs. 247.03 per liter. The expected reduction will partially reverse this recent hike.

Breakdown of Taxes and Distribution Costs

Each liter of petrol and diesel includes:

  • Petroleum Development Levy: Rs. 60
  • Customs Duties: Rs. 16
  • Dealer and Distributor Margins: Rs. 17

This brings the pre-distribution price of petrol to Rs. 243.03 per liter and diesel to Rs. 251.29 per liter. With a total tax burden of Rs. 76 per liter, a decrease in global oil prices offers the only room for price relief.

What to Expect Moving Forward?

While this modest decrease will provide some relief to consumers, the volatile nature of global oil markets means that future adjustments are likely. The government will review prices again in mid-November 2024, depending on exchange rate movements and crude oil prices.

Conclusion

Though small, the Rs. 2 to Rs. 3 per liter reduction from 1st November 2024 offers some respite for consumers amid rising living costs. With the winter season approaching, this drop could ease transportation and agricultural expenses slightly. The public hopes for further stability in the coming months as the government continues to monitor global trends.
